Friday, May 20
Shady Oaks Garden Club will be holding its biennial Standard Flower Show from 1-5 p.m. at the Memorial Park Community Center located at 510 Bert Street in Johnson City. The theme of the Flower Show, “Community in Action,” showcases the many activities and services that are available at the Center for the residents of our community. The Flower Show, which consists of floral arrangements and horticulture specimens, will be staged throughout the Community Center, providing attendees the opportunity to tour the entire facility. The show is open to the public, handicap accessible, and free of charge.
Saturday, May 21
The Elizabethton Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. at the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library. Guest speaker will be Tom Fugate, author of “Spy Dream,” “Sand Trap,” “Port in a Desert Storm” and “unFriendly Persuasion.” All members are invited to attend.
A Country Breakfast will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy good food and great fellowship. The breakfasts, which are held every third Saturday of each month, consist of bacon, fresh ground sausage, eggs, pancakes, gravy and biscuits, and more. Cost is by donation. The church is located at 878 Highway 81N, about five miles from downtown Jonesborough.
Community Garden Kickoff will be held at the Covered Bridge Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring live music, plant and seed swap, announcement of the winners of garden naming contest and gardening classes for kids and adults. Annual Siege at Fort Watauga — 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. It is the summer of 1776 and the Watauga settlement is at war. Join us at Sycamore Shoals State Park as 200 colonial and Native re-enactors present this dramatic retelling of the Cherokee attack brought on the settlers of the Watauga Valley. Visit the living history camps, shop with period vendors and witness battle re-enactments both days. Hear the rattle of muskets, smell the campfire smoke and see history come to life at the Siege of Fort Watauga. Contact the park for a detailed schedule.

Old Time Music Jam – Led by Art Lang from 1:30-4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Park. Enjoy the rich musical traditions of our region each month. Old-time musicians of all levels are welcome. Don’t play an instrument? Come on over, kick back and enjoy the tunes!

Carter County Proud meeting — At 6 p.m., the county’s new grassroots litter cleanup task force will meet at the Smokehouse BBQ Company. The public is invited to attend and will hear presentations by representatives from Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Division of Solid Waste Management on the impact of trash and dumping, how the community can act to protect the environment, and information regarding solid waste management. They will also hear an update on the group’s mission to become an affiliate of Keep Tennessee Beautiful. A cleanup will be scheduled and discussion of tabling at Covered Bridge Days will take place.

Watauga Valley Fife & Drum Corps — The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn. Meet our volunteer coordinator John Large at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming!

Alzheimers Tennessee Caregiver Support Group will meet at noon at Sycamore Springs Senior Living Center at 1504 W. Elk Ave. for caregivers of friends or relatives suffering from Alzheimers or another form of dementia. Attending the support group can help people to feel less isolated and to make connections with others facing similar challenges.
