Sycamore Shoals sets ‘History at Home’ programs

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park has announced its list of “History at Home” programs which will be presented by Seasonal Interpretive Rangers Corbin Hayslett and Steven Knapp during the month of June.
Wednesday, June 8th
10:30 am: Tomahawk Demonstration- Join Corbin in the fort and witness one of the most versatile tools and weapons of the Colonial era.
2:00 pm: Carter Mansion Tour- Built by Watauga settlement leaders, John and Landon Carter in 1775, a tour of Tennessee’s oldest frame home is a must! Adults – $5.00 (cash only please); 17 and under are free.
3:30 pm: Evolution of the Firelock- Join Steven on the back porch of the visitor center for an exploration of early firearms. Explore the history of the matchlock, flintlock, and percussion muskets. Investigate the progression of firearms from the 16th-19th centuries, and discover the tactics which surrounded these weapons.
Thursday, June 9th
10:30 am: Musket Firing Demonstration- Meet Steven on the back porch of the visitor center for a demonstration of the loading and firing procedure for the Brown Bess musket, the standard weapon of the British army in the Revolution.

Friday, June 10th
9:30 am: Nature Walk- Meet Corbin behind the visitor center for a walk along the river the natural surroundings of Sycamore Shoals.
10:30 am: Musket Firing Demonstration- Join Corbin on the back porch of the visitor center for a demonstration of the loading and firing procedure for the Brown Bess musket, the standard weapon of the British army in the Revolution.
11:30 am: Bridgeburners and Home Guard- Join Steven at the Carter Mansion for an exploration of the Civil War in East Tennessee. Learn about William B. Carter, mastermind of the Unionist bridge burning campaign in East Tennessee, and the Confederate Home Guard and its actions in East Tennessee and Appalachia in general.

Friday, June 10th
3:30 pm: Rifle and Musket Comparison: Join Steven and Corbin behind the visitor center for a comparison of the two weapons which faced off during the American Revolution. Steven will demonstrate the Brown Bess musket of the British army while Corbin will show the American long rifle. Discover the differences between these weapons and their different uses on the battlefield.
Saturday, June 11
9:30 am: For King and Revenge: Loyalists in the American Revolution- Join Steven in the fort for an exploration of those that fought against American independence. Discover why some Americans chose to fight for King George and against their neighbors.
10:30 am-1:00 pm: Life in the Fort – Steven and Corbin will be in the fort demonstrating the life of those who would reside in the fort to defend the nearby settlements against attack.
2:00 pm: Carter Mansion Tour – Built by Watauga settlement leaders, John and Landon Carter in 1775, a tour of Tennessee’s oldest frame home is a must! Adults – $5.00 (cash only please); 17 and under are free.
