Cardinals sweep Elizabethton in doubleheader

The Cardinals handed the Elizabethton Twins their first two losses of the season Tuesday night as the teams faced off in a double header in Johnson City.

In game one, neither team could really get the bats going. The Cardinals, however, were able muster up two runs in seven innings to give the Elizabethotn Twins their first loss of the season, 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, Cardinals Allen Cordoda hit an RBI double to net teammate DeAndre Asbury-Heath to give Johnson City a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals picked up their last run in the fourth with Johnson City’s Luis Bandes being walked home to give the Cards their 2-0 total.
Overall the Cardinal would only make two hits, while the Twins had four. Twins’ Amaurys Minier, Mitchell Kranson, Bryant Hayman, and Casey Scoggins all had hits for Elizabethton in game one.
At the mound, Twins’ Sean Poppen started things out for Elizabethton and tossed for three innings. Poppen picked up the loss as he recorded two strikeouts and three walks. He finished the night with two runs and two hits against him. Elizabethton’s Andrew Vaspuez relieved Poppen in the fourth and worked for two innings, while striking out two hitter and picking up one walk.
For the Cards, Ramon Santos was awarded the win after taking over for JC’s Daniel Castano in the fourth inning. Over four innings, Santos struck out one and walked one, while giving up two hits.

Things started out with a bang for the Twins as Elizabethton’s Jaylin Davis blasted his fourth home run of the season in the first inning. However, the Cardinals handed Elizabethton it second loss of the night 3-1.
JC answered Davis’ home run in the bottom of the frame with a run from Yariel Gonzalez, who came home off a single by Joshua Lopez.
The Cards (3-3) moved to 2-1 in the third as JC’s Jonathan Rivera scored during a single from Lopez.
The final run of the game came in the fifth when Gonzalez scored off balk.
On the mound first for the Twins was Jose Martinez. Martinez threw for four innings during which he retired three hitters and walked two, while giving up eight hits and three runs.
JC’s Ian Oxnevad picked up the win, after throwing for six innings. Oxnevad finished the night with four strike outs and no walks. He had five hits and one run against. The Cards Yeison Medina came in during the seventh and got the save.
The Elizabethton Twins (4-2) will host Pulaski (2-3) today for their home opener sponsored by the Elizabethton Star.
