The Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire that damaged the gymnasium floor inside Unaka High School Thursday.
At roughly 5:53 p.m., firefighters with the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to Unaka High School. Once on scene, firefighters used extinguishers to knock down a small fire inside the gym. The cause of the fire, which left a sizable ring of damage underneath one of the basketball goals, has not been determined. The fire appeared to have started inside a bucket that was left on the floor, said Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Chance Boling.
The fire was reported by Unaka High School Athletic Director Aaron Dugger, who happened to be at the school when he noticed what he initially thought was dust due the stripping and waxing of the gymnasium floor. After investigating, Dugger saw the flames and called the fire department.
