Saturday, Sept. 10
The Street Reunion will be held at 1 p.m. behind the Roan Mountain Post Office. All family members are invited to attend and bring a covered dish. For more information call (423) 896-7040.
Deliverance Church of God, Hampton, will have a yard sale/bake sale from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Breakfast will be served.
The Young at Heart Sunday School Class at Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church will have a huge yard sale/bake sale from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall located past the church on Riverview Road. There will be household items, clothes for men, women and children, toys and fried apple pies. Crafts will also be available.
The Huffine, Scott, Slagle, France, Francis and Price Reunion will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Boones Creek Christian Church, 305 Christian Church Road, Gray. The Carter County/Elizabethton Retired Teachers will meet at 2 p.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church. Chris Hitechew will present the program. All retired teachers are welcome.
The Johnson City United Auto Workers Retirees will hold their monthly meeting at 10 a.m. at the Pipefitters Union Hall, 655 Watauga Road, Watauga. The Watauga Association of Genealogists will meet at the Johnson City Public Library, 100 West Millard St., at 6:30 p.m. The speaker is Dr. Margaret Hougland, a WAGS member and retired faculty member of the ETSU Quillen College of Medicine. The Elizabethton Senior Center will host a breakfast buffet from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Center, 428 E. G St. Tickets are $7 and carryouts will be available. The menu will include all-you-can eat biscuits and gravy, sausage, ham, scrambled eggs, pancakes, juice and coffee. Entertainment will include ETSU Bluegrass and the Roan Mountain Mountaineers. All proceeds go to support the senior center.
Saturday, Sept. 17
The Happy Valley High School Class of 1970 will have its annual get-together at 6 p.m., rain or shine, at the home of Ray Loveless. Those attending are asked to bring finger foods, drinks and a lawn chair. Directions: Turn onto Mary Patton Road (new Gap Creek Road) and go four miles and turn right onto Loveless Road. Ray’s home is the last house on the left. Picnic shelter is behind his house.
The Mountain Empire Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the General Morgan Inn in Greeneville. The speaker will be Allen Jackson, Retired AF and Historian, who will talk about a local Greeneville veteran who gave his life in WWII. A meal will be served and the cost is $27 per person. Rocky Top Gun Permit School will offer a handgun carry permit school at 135 Keenburg Road, Elizabethton, starting at 8 a.m. Ken Potter, a veteran law enforcement officer, is the instructor for the class. Cost of the class is $55. You will need to bring your weapon and 50 rounds of ammo. Potter says for those who haven’t yet purchased a gun, loaner guns are available. English as a Second Language (ESL) will begin classes from 6:15-8:30 p.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 100 East F St., Elizabethton. Registration will be on Monday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. This will be the fifth year that Memorial has offered English classes to those in our area who would like to learn to speak and write English. There is an excellent staff of teachers who have been with the program since its beginning and strive to serve their students well by teaching a better understanding of English.
