Saturday, Dec. 31
The Elizabethton Senior Dance Club will host a New Year’s Eve Dance at the Elizabethton Elks Lodge, No. 1847, 1000 N. Sycamore St., from 8 to 10 p.m. The Rambling Rose Band will provide music. Those attending the dance are asked to bring finger foods to share. There is a $6 door charge. All seniors are welcome.
Sunday, Jan. 1
Roan Mountain State Park will hold a New Year’s Day Hike at the park’s Moonshiners’ Run Trail beginning at 2 p.m.
Frontier Footsteps First Day Hike — Join Ranger Davis for a special guided interpretive walk through the grounds of Sycamore Shoals and along portions of the walking path. Discover the historical events that took place surrounding Sycamore Shoals and their significance to the formation of our State and Country. Dress appropriately for the weather as we will be taking a casual stroll on the walking path and through the park grounds. Meet in the picnic area beside the Visitor Center, hike will begin at 9 am. Please no pets. Hike is by reservation only and subject to cancellation due to significantly inclement weather. Contact the park for more information at 423-543-5808.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) will meet at First Baptist Church, 212 East F St., Elizabethton. Weigh-in begins at 5:30-6:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 6:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. Winterfest Art Show — December 1 until January 3 , 2017. Kick off the holidays at Sycamore Shoals! The Watauga Valley Art League exhibition and sale offers great opportunities for holiday shopping! Artwork from the Watauga Valley Art League will remain on display during regular park hours throughout the month of December until January 3.
Thursday, Jan. 5
A series of meetings for people who keep honeybees or are interested in them will be held once a month in Elizabethton over the winter. The meetings are meant to be informal get-togethers to share information, tell stories and learn from each other about the bees. There will be some short talks by beekeepers, as well as videos. The meetings will be held at the Elizabethton Public Library, 201 North Sycamore St., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Parking is on the street, or in the parking lots across the street and behind the library. All are welcomed, but space is limited, so come a little early to get a seat. For more information, call 543-1568.

Watauga Valley Fife and Drums from 10 a.m. until noon. The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn. Meet our volunteer coordinator John Large at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming!

The Southern Countrymen Band will play at the Johnson City Moose #1901 on West Lakeview Drive, Johnson City, from 8 to 11 p.m. Free admission.
