Students in Alisha King’s Second Grade classroom at Unaka Elementary recently completed a project to create their own book.
“As a first-year teacher I wanted to do something for my students that they could cherish the rest of their lives,” King said. “I believe in teaching life-long lessons as well as academics.”
Each student in the class contributed two essays and two illustrations to complete this one-of-a-kind collection of stories, which the students titled “Pete’s Wonderland of Holidays.”
“This project helped the students strengthen their writing, reading, and grammar skills,” King said. “In addition, they also learned the importance of independent thought, collaboration with peers, deadlines, and determination to accomplish one’s goals.”
Once the essays and illustrations were complete, King had them published into a book and gave a copy to each student.
King said she enjoyed creating the book with her students and she looks forward to doing the project again next near with a new class.
“I am overjoyed and very proud of every single student in our classroom community,” King said. “This has been such a wonderful experience, and publishing a book each school year will be a tradition in my classroom.”
“I want to thank Carter County Schools for awarding me with the opportunity to fulfill my life-long dream of being a teacher,” she added. “Without them, this accomplishment would not have been possible.”
