Liberty! is in its second week and on course to being one of the best productions of the state’s official drama in its 39 years, said Sycamore Shoals State Park manager Jennifer Bauer.
“We have had absolutely a phenomenal show,” said Bauer. “The cast is on their game. The new script is perfect. And everybody is having so much fun because it is an exciting and really engaging production this year.”
Last Thursday, the show had its opening night in front of a crowd of more than two hundred people.
“It was one of the biggest opening night crowds that we have ever had,” said Bauer. This year is the first time that the show has had two directors, Tony DeVault and assistant director C. Keith Young. Young also composed the musical score that can be heard during the drama.
“They have worked a lot with the actors and actresses on their presentation skills,” said Bauers. “The people in the play have taken it very very serious. They have presented it with such a flare this year.”
The drama centers around the 1772 formation of the Watauga Association, which is recognized as the first government in North America that was free of British control.
This year’s run of the drama has five showings left on Friday and Saturday this weekend and Thursday through Friday next week. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. with box offices opening at 6 p.m.
“We hope people will come out,” Bauer said. “I think they are really missing something if they miss this year.”
