Summer Concert Series: Sound Traveler — 7:30-8:30 PM at the Amphitheater at Roan Mountain State Park. This eclectic-acoustic duo utilizes a wide array of instruments and vocal harmonies to create feel-good music, including classic and contemporary favorites. Concerts will be relocated to Picnic Shelter 3 in the Campground in case of bad weather. Free admission, donations accepted.

The 34th Annual Smith-White-Price Reunion will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hampton Christian Church Fellowship Hall. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m., and those attending are asked to bring covered dishes of food as well as family photos and memorabilia to share. 14th Annual Elizabethton Butterfly Count – Meet naturalist Don Holt at Sycamore Shoals at 9 am for this day-long winged adventure across town. Come for all or part of the day. Sponsored by the North American Butterfly Association & Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. (Rain Date to be announced).

The Elizabethton Back-2-School Bash will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Elizabethton High School’s Citizens Bank Stadium. The event is free and open to all. 1,000 backpacks full of school supplies will be given away, and there will be 25+ health and education partners on site. There will also be 10 inflatables, two obstacle courses, lunch and other activities on site. The event is planned by Elizabethton City Schools, East River Park Christian Church, Elizabethton Police Department and Carter County Health Department and is brought to you by nearly 50 community sponsors including East River Park Christian Church, Calvary Baptist Church and Academy Sports & Outdoors.

Fall Gardening with Ben Hunter — From 9 am until Noon at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. This event is free and registration is not required. It’s not too early to be planning & building your spring garden. Gardener extraordinaire, Ben Hunter, will be joining us to share his experiences & techniques for growing the garden of your dreams!  Sponsored by the Northeast Tennessee Master Gardeners.

Learn to Play the Pennywhistle — Join instructor Martha Egan on Saturday, Aug 12 from 1:30 pm – 3 pm at Sycamore Shoals State Park. Cost: $25(includes Clarke or Walton  pennywhistle in Key of D, book, and CD); $15 if you bring your own instrument. Popular in the British Isles in the 1800’s, this class includes the fundamentals of holding and sounding your pennywhistle, learning the first notes, and playing a song—or come and advance the skills you already possess. Music and other supplemental materials provided.

The Johnson City United Auto Workers Retirees will hold their monthly meeting at 10 a.m. at Maple Grove Restaurant in Unicoi. Directions: Follow I-26 East toward Asheville. Take Exit 32, and turn left at the end of the ramp. The restaurant is two-tenths of a mile on the right. The Elizabethton Senior Dance Club will hold a dance at the Elizabethton Elks Lodge, No. 1847, 1000 N. Sycamore St., from 7 to 10 p.m. The Rambling Rose Band will provide music. Those attending the dances are asked to bring finger foods to share. There is a $6 door charge. The club holds dances the second and fourth Friday nights of each month. All seniors are welcome.

The descendants of James Madison and Ann Bailey Byrd and Jefferson and Emmaline Edwards Bailey will have their annual reunion beginning at 1 p.m. at Lower Brummitt’s Creek Brethren Church near Relief in Mitchell County, N.C. Each family is asked to bring a picnic lunch. A decoration will follow at the family cemetery where the ancestors are buried.

Watauga Valley Art League Meeting and Program —

Sunday, August 13 from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm at Sycamore Shoals State Park. Everyone is welcome to join the Watauga Valley Art League for their monthly meetings that feature a guest speakers and fellowship with area artists. WVAL meets the 2nd Sunday of each month, except October.

Know Your Sewing Machine — Join instructor Donna Horowitz from 1 to 4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Park for this basic class. Cost: $25.00. Have a sewing machine but don’t know how to use it? This class will teach you basic machine operations (Embroidery machines and sergers are not included). Please bring –  Sewing machine, sewing machine manual and accessories , small scissors. Instructor brings fabric & thread.

20th Annual Fort Watauga Knap-In — from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at Sycamore Shoals State Park. Knapping — with a “K” — has nothing to do with sleep!  Knapping is the art of making stone tools, and the Knap-In at Fort Watauga is our celebration of Tennessee Archaeology Week. Watch primitive skills craftsmen make arrowheads, spear points and other survival tools.  There will be demonstrations of primitive tools such as the bow, arrow and atlatl throughout the day.

Basketry – Candy Jar Basket — Join instructor Candy Alexander from 9 am – 4 pm at Sycamore Shoals State Park. Cost:  $25. Learn how to weave over a jar, making a beautiful and functional piece! It has a wood base and a wood lid.  Choice of colors offered.  Dimensions: approx. 4”w x 6”h. .  Bring garden or kitchen shears, an old hand towel, pencil,  small measuring tape, small spray bottle of water, and strong clothespins.
