Despite trailing early Friday night at South Greene, the Happy Valley Warriors pulled things together for a 28-7 Region 1-AA win over the Rebels.
The win allows the Warriors to clinch the No. 2 seed in Region 1-AA. Happy Valley will host Oneida, the No. 3 seed out of Region 2, next Friday for the first round of TSSAA Class AA Playoffs.
“It’s a whole a new season,” said Happy Valley head coach about heading into the postseason. “We are proud to be 7-3, but right now, everybody is 0-0. It is great to be at home. We want to be able to provide a big win for our fans and community.”
On the ground, the Warriors were led by the rushing of Dakota Cochran and Will Tittle who both had more than 80 yards.
The Warriors got on the scoreboard first Friday night as Cochran ran in a 20-yard touchdown. The point-after kick failed to give the Warriors a small 6-0 lead with 8:28 left in the first quarter.
The Rebels answered as South Greene’s Derick Howlett scored on a 41-yard run. With the PAT good, South Greene led 7-6 with 3:25 left in the first quarter.
The Warriors, however, picked up back-to-back touchdowns as HV’s Brayden Sams scored on a 46-yard TD run and a 25-yard interception return, allowing the Warriors to take a 20-7 lead into the half.
With 7:08 left in the third quarter, Tittle rushed in a 4-yarder, before Sams kept in the 2-point conversion for the game finally tally, 28-7.
South Greene’s Howlett led the game in the rushing with 91 yards on 16 carries.
