VFW New Year’s Eve Party — Looking for a way to ring in the new year? The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2166 in Elizabethton will be hosting a special New Year’s Eve party and the event is open to the community. The event will kick off at 8 p.m. with music by local favorites T.V. Barnett & The Moonshiners. The party will continue through the evening and into the new year, with breakfast being served at 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 1. Tickets for the event are $10 per person or $15 per couple. Tickets can be purchased at either the VFW post or at the Whiteway Grill in Roan Mountain. The VFW Post 2166 is located at 2001 W. Elk Avenue in Elizabethton. First Hike at the historic John & Landon Carter Mansion — 9 a.m. Built circa 1775, the historic Carter Mansion is located at 1031 Broad Street in Elizabethton. The architectural details of the home are quite elaborate compared to most homes on the frontier. Enjoy the beauty of this site and learn about the history of this fascinating early home built by John and Landon Carter. The tour will meet at the Carter Mansion and last approximately 1-1/2 hours. First Day Hike at Roan Mountain State Park — 9 a.m. — Start the New Year off right with Roan Mountain State Park’s First Hike of 2018. Join a Park Ranger for a winter morning hike along the frosty Doe River. Meet at Picnic Shelter 3 in the Campground. We will be hiking approximately 1 mile out and 1 mile back along the Tom Gray Trail. Please be prepared for cold, windy, and perhaps even snowy conditions as the average January temperature in Roan Mountain is 24 degrees! Following the hike, we will warm up with hot chocolate at Picnic Shelter 3. Please register in advance for this event.

An Afternoon of Early 19th Century Dance with the Sabine Hill Social Society – from 1 to 4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Beginners and seasoned dancers alike are all welcome! The afternoon will include English Country Dance and early Appalachian dance techniques.

Rocky Top Gun Permit School will offer a handgun carry permit class at 135 Keenburg Road, Elizabethton, starting at 8 a.m. Ken Potter, a veteran law enforcement officer, is the instructor for the class. Rocky Top is one of the first schools to offer permit training and has been teaching the program since 1997. Cost of the class is $55. You will need to bring your weapon and 50 rounds of ammo.
