Cloudland breezes past Cedarview Seahawks

Having a bunch of players score a little trumps one player scoring a lot. That point was made on Tuesday night at Sonny Smith gym where the Cloudland Highlanders had five players score double figures in a 78-48 non-conference win over Cedarview Academy.

Guard Isaac Strickland scored a game-high 31 points for the Seahawks who fell behind by 26 points after the first period. Strickland showed a fine shooting touch from outside with seven trey’s on the night, but no one else on the Cedarview squad had more than six points.

“We are trying to get back in rhythm,” ‘Landers head coach Gary Harrison said. “We have had some kids out sick and we have been out of sync the last few games. We worked on some different things and had some kids step up and play well.”

Cloudland (11-8 overall) jumped out to a 29-3 first period lead with Josh Blair and Robert Leeper each scoring eight points in the period. The ‘Landers extended their lead to 49-18 at halftime and were never threatened although Strickland began to heat up in the third period scoring 15 of his teams’ 18 points in the quarter.

Tonight we got everybody some valuable minutes,” Harrison said. “And that will help us when we get back into conference play on Friday. We moved the ball around tonight and we want to get it inside and we did a good job of that down the stretch.”

For Cloudland, Leeper had a team-high 18 points with Blair adding 12. Others in double figures for Cloudland were Jordan Coffey and Hunter Shell with 11 and Thomas Hicks with 10.

Stacia Wilson scored a game-high 15 points in the post as the Lady Highlanders won an easy one on Tuesday evening. Cloudland’s smothering defense held the Lady Seahawks to single-digit scoring in every quarter forcing 23 turnovers in the process.

“All the kids played hard and busted their tails on defense,” Lady ‘Landers head coach Mike Lunsford said. “We’re getting better at moving the ball around. I’m proud of my bench – all freshmen – and hopefully we’ll get Olivia (Chambers) back soon. We are a better team when we can bring her off the bench with Abbey Gouge.”

The ‘Landers led 19-1 after one period and 30-5 at the break. Post Lakie Derrick posted a team-high eight points with six rebounds for Cedarview while Kenzie Birchfield, Trinity Vines, Gracie Freeman and Leah Birchfield each had six points for Cloudland.
