Lady Bulldogs hold off Cloudland

The Hampton Lady Bulldogs visited Roan Mountain Friday for a conference showdown.

In a game that saw the teams head into the final period tied 25-25, the Lady Bulldogs held on for a 37-34 win.

At the end of one, the Lady Highlanders held a three-point lead, 9-6, over Hampton. The Lady Bulldogs had a 3-pointer from Stephanie Campbell and Shyanne Tuelle. While the Lady ‘Landers saw four points from Cloudland’s Jasmine Birchfield. Cloudland’s Trinity Vines had a bucket-and-one in the period to help the Lady Highlanders cause.

Cloudland opened the second period with a seven-point run that was capped off by a three-point play from Lady Highlander Stacia Wilson to climb out to a 16-8 lead with 5:12 left in the quarter. The Lady Highlanders’ drive saw four points from Vines. On the back end of the first half, Campbell and Hampton’s Brooke Hughes connected on back-to-back buckets to cut Cloudland’s lead to 16-12 heading into the half.

Cloudland’s Kenzie Birchfield had a foul shot and a 3-pointer to give the Lady Highlanders a 19-13 edge early in the third. Vines drove the baseline for a bucket to push Cloudland on out to a 21-14 lead with 2:40 left in the third. Tuelle answered with a steal before hitting a fastbreak layup while drawing a foul for a three-point play. Campbell followed up with a layup of her own to cut the Lady Highlanders lead to 21-19 with less than two to play in the third. The Lady Highlanders climbed out 25-22 before Tuelle hit a last second 3-pointer to tie things up 25-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

The first two and a half minutes of the final period were scoreless as both teams struggled with turnovers. The scoring drought ended as Tuelle knocked down a close-range jumper to give Hampton its second lead of the night, 27-25.
Hampton’s Hughes hit a shot from outside to extend the Lady ‘Dogs edge to 30-25 with 3:40 left to go. A pair of free throws from Hampton’s Campbell pushed the Lady Bulldogs out to a seven-point lead before Cloudland’s Vines connected on a bucket to make it a five-point contest with 1:14 left in the game.  A layup from Wilson narrowed the Lady Bulldogs lead to 33-29 with less than a minute to play. A 3-pointer from Cloudland’s Gracie Freeman at the last second would the game its final total.
