Students in the lower grades at Unaka Elementary School received a special visitor on Wednesday morning as part of an initiative to encourage an interest in science in the younger students.

Unaka Elementary Principal Dr. Diana Bowers wants to encourage students to develop an interest in science, so she decided to invite community members who have careers in related to science to come read to the children and talk a little bit about what they do.

On Wednesday, Dr. Robert Acuff, who is a professor in the Department of Surgery at the Quillen College of Medicine, visited students in Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade. During his visit, he read books to the students dealing with doctors and anatomy.
