Two candidates qualified to appear on the August ballot seeking election to the Carter County Board of Education seat for District 7.

Officials with the Carter County Election Commission confirmed that Creola Miller and Josh Hubbard had completed and returned their candidate petitions and both individuals had enough signatures of registered voters to qualify as candidates.

The Carter County Board of Education does not run via political parties, so candidates do not participate in the Primary Election. Candidates for the Board appear on the August General Election ballot.

Steve Hyder, who had served as the District 7 representative on the Board of Education had previously qualified as a candidate but later withdrew from the election. He was the only candidate who had qualified, and his withdrawal left no candidates for the seat.

Carter County Administrator of Elections Tracy Harris said due to the fact there were no candidates for the seat, the state decided to allow an extension of the candidate qualification deadline for the District 7 race only.

Hyder recently submitted his resignation to the Board of Education, noting that he no longer lived within the district.
