Hampton’s Bayley McGee made it official as to where she will play ball in college.
The junior Lady Bulldog, who graduated early, signed her name with Mars Hill Thursday.
“It has always been a dream of mine,” said McGee. “I never really thought I could achieve it because, you know, I’m tiny and all that. I had a couple setbacks this year, so I thought it was going to be a faraway dream.
“But when it did happen, it was unreal, definitely a dream come true,” added McGee.
McGee never got to touch the floor for the Lady Bulldogs varsity after transferring to Hampton her junior year but did see a lot of time for the JV squad.
“We had about all freshmen, and she was good for them because she is all about effort and got them playing harder,” said Hampton head coach Bud Hazelwood.
Even though McGee’s basketball career at Hampton was cut short due to early graduation, the soon to be Lady Lion had some big moments during her high school hoops career. While at Happy Valley, McGee was apart of the Lady Warriors team that won the 2017 District 1-AA Tournament championship over Sullivan East. During that win, McGee helped the Lady Warriors along with ten points. McGee might not be tall, but what she lacks in height, she made up for with her speed and ability to drive inside and score.
McGee said that during her time at Hampton she felt very welcomed.
“It was so great coming in here and being welcomed in by all of them,” said McGee. “Even the varsity players I didn’t get to play with, they were all welcoming to me and happy I was here.”
While at Mars Hill, McGee will be teammates with former Lady Bulldogs standout Alexus Grubbs, who McGee played Summer ball with.
“I know she will help me out a lot,” said McGee. “She will be like my big sister there.”
McGee said she plans on studying nursing while at Mars Hill.
