Saturday, June 16

The Annual Isaacs Cemetery Dinner will be held at 1 p.m. at St. John Freewill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, Roan Mountain. Those attending are asked to bring enough food and drinks for their family. Meat, ice, eating utensils, plates and napkins will be furnished. The cemetery is located atop Buck Mountain. All help and donations for maintenance of the cemetery is appreciated. For more information, call Charles or Pearl Markland at 423-481-1286.

Watauga Valley Fife and Drums from 10 a.m. until noon. The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications, and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn. Meet at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming.

The Sycamore Shoals Hospital Volunteers will be hosting a Lionne Designs Jewelry Sale from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. in Classrooms A & B at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this jewelry sale. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Ballad Payroll Deduction, and cash will be accepted for payment of purchased items. The profits from this sale help to benefit Sycamore Shoals’ patients and their families.

The Elizabethton Senior Center will be having a “Cancer: Thriving and Surviving Workshop” from 9 to 11 a.m. This is an evidence-based program with certified leaders. No cost. Open to anyone. Spouses, family members, and caregivers are welcome. Each participant receives a workbook with relaxation CD. Please call the Center at 543-4362 to register. Limited seating.

Alzheimer’s Tennessee Caregiver Support Group will meet the third Monday of each month at noon at the Sycamore Springs Senior Living, 1504 West Elk Ave., Elizabethton. The confidential group provides education, hope and encouragement to caregivers and family members of loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or any related dementia. Participants can learn about  community resources, share coping techniques and gain insight and feedback from others who understand. TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) will meet at First Baptist Church, 212 East F St., Elizabethton. Weigh-in begins at 5:30-6:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 6:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. Songs and Tunes at Sabine Hill – 2-3:30 p.m. Do you enjoy experiencing history as it would have been? Listen to melodies with roots in Europe and Appalachia ring through the halls of one of Tennessee’s finest examples of Federal architecture. Meet Ranger Corbin Hayslett at Sabine Hill to learn about the musical melting-pot that was frontier Tennessee and how people from around the world shared culture through song. $10 for adults, $7 for children age 7-17, Free for children 6 and under. Stories & S’mores around the Campfire — Friday, June 29 from 8:30 pm. Adults – $7.00; Ages 7 to 17 years – $5.00; 6 and under free. Registration required – www.tnstateparks.com/parks/events/sycamore-shoals Choose “Upcoming Events” in the left hand menu. Join park historic interpreter Chad Bogart for an evening of storytelling around the glow of a crackling campfire. All the ingredients for s’mores will be there (drinks not provided). Enjoy your sweet treat and then settle in for some knee slapping humor, heartwarming tales, and a bit of wit and wisdom thrown in for good measure. Make sure to bring a chair and/or blanket. Program will be in the lower picnic area. In the event of inclement weather, program will be moved indoors.

Independence on the Frontier: Militia Muster at Fort Watauga —Saturday, June 30 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 1, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. — Experience the 4th of July, 18th century-style!  What did colonists think about a new nation?  Be a guest in Fort Watauga as news of Independence arrives to the colonial frontier.  Walk among historical characters and hear their varied reactions to the Declaration, from fear of war to the hope of a brighter future.  The Celebration will take place on Saturday; the muster will continue until 3 pm on Sunday.
