The family of the late Cameron and Annie Turner Scalf will have a reunion at 12 p.m. at Cat Island Park. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish, dessert, drinks and eating utensils. If any question feel free to call 423-470-8463.

Watauga Valley Fife and Drums from 10 a.m. until noon. The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications, and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn. Meet at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming.

The family of W.W. Bowers will be holding their 21st family reunion at Cat Island Park beginning at 2 p.m. Family and friends are invited and if you can bring a covered dish, it would help. Any questions, call 318-771-1831.

Old Time Music Jam – Led by Art Lang 4 from 1:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. Enjoy the rich musical traditions of our region each month. Old time musicians of all levels are welcome. Don’t play an instrument? Come on over, kick back, and enjoy the tunes!

The Elizabethton Senior Center will be having a “Cancer: Thriving and Surviving Workshop” from 9 to 11 a.m. This is an evidence-based program with certified leaders. No cost. Open to anyone. Spouses, family members, and caregivers are welcome. Each participant receives a workbook with relaxation CD. Please call the Center at 543-4362 to register. Limited seating.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) will meet at First Baptist Church, 212 East F St., Elizabethton. Weigh-in begins at 5:30-6:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 6:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. Stories & S’mores around the Campfire from 8:30 p.m. Adults – $7; ages 7 to 17 years – $5; 6 and under free. Registration required – www.tnstateparks.com/parks/events/sycamore-shoals Choose “Upcoming Events” in the left hand menu. Join park historic interpreter Chad Bogart for an evening of storytelling around the glow of a crackling campfire. All the ingredients for s’mores will be there (drinks not provided). Enjoy your sweet treat and then settle in for some knee slapping humor, heartwarming tales, and a bit of wit and wisdom thrown in for good measure. Make sure to bring a chair and/or blanket. Program will be in the lower picnic area. In the event of inclement weather, program will be moved indoors.

Independence on the Frontier: Militia Muster at Fort Watauga from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 1, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. — Experience the 4th of July, 18th century-style! What did colonists think about a new nation? Be a guest in Fort Watauga as news of Independence arrives to the colonial frontier. Walk among historical characters and hear their varied reactions to the Declaration, from fear of war to the hope of a brighter future. The Celebration will take place on Saturday; the muster will continue until 3 p.m. Sunday.

Independence Day Celebration at Roan Mountain State Park. The Park commemorates the 4th of July the old-fashioned way with a bicycle parade, traditional field games, checkers tournament, and more. Family fun for all ages!  Events all day, starting at 9:30 AM. Meet at: the campground.

“Scenes of Liberty!” by Mike Hill. Exhibit open at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. Join us for an exciting art show that commemorates the 40th season of Outdoor Drama at Sycamore Shoals!  Don’t miss this opportunity to see Mr. Hill’s Liberty! inspired original brush and ink drawings, hand colored reproductions, and large scale Giclee reproductions on canvas of artwork created from images of the cast of Liberty! and militia re-enactors at Sycamore Shoals.  A coloring book and notecards have also been created from his drawings that are for sale at the park.

Summer Art Show at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Meet-the-Artist Awards Reception: Sunday, July 8                          1:30 – 4:00 pm

This multi-media exhibit is two art shows in one:  “15th Annual Judged show” and the “23rd  Annual Watauga Valley Art League Member show”. Public is invited to the July 8 reception and to enjoy the art exhibit all month. Exhibit open at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Sundays.

Liberty: The Saga of Sycamore Shoals – Our 40th Year!

Celebrate the 40th Year of Tennessee’s official outdoor drama, presented by local performers against the backdrop of Fort Watauga.   See the Revolution as told by the Overmountain Men: colonists who defied British law and settled on Cherokee lands.  These settlers formed an independent government, made treaties with the Cherokee, defended their homes, and fought a British army at the epic battle of King’s Mountain.  Bleacher seating is available in the Amphitheater.  Sponsored by Friends of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. July through August History At Home Summer Ranger Programs at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. A creative mix of historical & natural programs presented throughout the summer by our Seasonal Interpretive Rangers Jessica Newell and Stuart Shelton.
