Elizabethton Police Department, Carter County Rescue Squad and other emergency rescue personnel were able to rescue three youths from the Watauga River Friday afternoon.
Reportedly, the three were making their way down the river until they were hemmed up in the river, near the Elizabethton Linear Trail.
Michael Oaks was walking the trail when he heard the noise from the river.
“They were hollering at each other. I made my way to them and held my phone up to let them know I was calling 911,” he said. “I tried to make my way to them but couldn’t.”
Oaks said personnel was on scene quickly from the time he made the call.
Once workers were able to see the trio, CCRS made their way to the scene by dropping into the water from Serenity’s Edge Campground.
The three were then able to be transported in a safety raft with no signs of injury.
