Family struck by lightning during Friday storm

A spokesperson with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the Elizabethton Star that a family of four was taken to the hospital after being injured when lightning struck a tree within the Blue Springs community.
According to the department, a family of four was rafting on the Watauga River when a storm rolled into the area. At that time, the family made their way to shore and took shelter under a tree, which was struck by lightning.
Three emergency medical service units were dispatched to the scene. A 32-year-old, 29-year-old and their children, ages five and one, were taken to a local hospital for minor burns. No further information was provided prior to the Elizabethton Star’s press deadline.
