Bouncing back from a shutout loss to Dobyns-Bennett last week the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones rebounded with a strong statement on Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium.

The Lady Cyclones (6-2 overall, 2-0 conference) blanked David Crockett 4-nil in girls soccer action.

The Cyclones so totally dominated ball possession that the Lady Pioneers did not manage one shot on the EHS goal.

Meanwhile, the Cyclones got first-half goals from senior defensive midfielder Abbey Townsend on a fine direct kick from 20 yards away that beat Crockett goalkeeper Alyssa Suits to the high side under the crossbar.

That goal came in the 20th minute and in the 31st-minute freshman Tessa Lamb fired home the rebound of a shot from junior Lexi Brown to make it a 2-nil halftime match.

“We did ok, you can’t argue with a four, zero shutout,” Lady Cyclones head coach Bill McClay said. “I don’t think we gave them a shot on goal. There were two that my keeper had to handle, but they would have gone wide anyway. All of our goals were assisted, but we didn’t take advantage of all the opportunities we had. We had a number of crosses but only one person in the box.”

The second half opened with temperatures decreased significantly, and the Cyclones came out more vibrant and in attacking mode. In the second minute of the second half, Brown fired a left-footed ball into the box, and junior striker Kaylen Shell headed it past Suits on a pretty goal, and it gave EHS a three-goal lead.

“We got to move the ball a little more side to side. It gives us a chance to get more than one attacker in the box,” McClay said. “We scored on a header but their goalkeeper positioned herself well, and she did a good job of cutting out our crosses. If they were low and close, she collected them.”

The final goal for EHS came in the 57th minute and was scored by Brown with an assist from junior forward Maggie Johnson. The Cyclones will hit the road to Gray on Thursday evening for a match with Daniel Boone before coming home on September 10 when they will face Morristown West and on the 11th will face a crucial conference match with Sullivan South.
