Heavy rains caused significant flooding in the Roan Mountain area Thursday.

According to Carter County Emergency Management Agency Director Gary Smith, many roadways and bridges were affected and members of the Carter County Highway Department had to work to get some of the roads back up and passable.

“They are working on Cove Creek Road and Garland Branch,” said Smith at roughly 3:30 p.m. Thursday. “They had pavement wash away, but the tiles were still in place. They are putting in rock and stuff so those roads will be fully passable. There are a couple of places where the shoulder of the roadway washed away. They will have to fill in those places also and get those back and fully stable.”

Smith went on to say that most of the flooding had subsided by Thursday afternoon, and that the Carter County Highway Department would have affected roads back in use by the end of the day Thursday.

Thursday’s flooding also caused the early dismissal of Carter County schools.
