The Carter County Sheriffs Office and Hampton High School are investigating an alleged threat made by a student who attends the school, said Carter County Schools Director Kevin Ward.

The supposed threat was allegedly communicated through the social media application Snapchat, which deletes messages, if not saved, after being read, said a source close to the situation. The nature of the threat, which was supposedly made this week, was not known. The Sheriffs Department confirmed that the agency is investigating an incident at the school but couldn’t release any more details.

The student in question was not at Hampton High School on Wednesday and will not be back until the investigations are completed, said Ward.
