Cut down those nets: T.A. Dugger outlasts Unicoi Co. for Area One boys’ championship, 42-36

KINGSPORT—Famous wrestler Ric Flair said on numerous occasions that to be the best you have to beat the best.

The T.A. Dugger Jr. High Cyclone boys’ basketball team proved that statement during the past week and were rewarded by taking down the Unicoi Co. Jr. Blue Devils in the Area 1 middle school boys’ championship by a 42-36 on Thursday at John Sevier Middle School.

With the win, the Jr. Cyclones advance to the East Tennessee Sectional in Knoxville on Saturday where they will tangle with Lake Forest out of Cleveland at 5:15 pm on the court of Hardin Valley Academy.

Tournament MVP Dalton Mitchell totaled 12 points in the championship game and doled out 8 assists. All-tournament selection Peyton Johnson matched Mitchell as he sank 12 points as well while recording 8 rebounds.

Cade Russell provided important play by swishing home 6 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and picking the Jr. Blue Devils pocket to the tune of 6 steals.

Bradley Cannon contributed with 5 points in the contest with Carter Davison recording 4 points and reeling in 3 rebounds.

Nate Stephens also had a nice game scoring 3 points, sweeping the board for 6 rebounds, and collecting 6 steals.

With the win, the Jr. Cyclones have crafted a 19-5 record on the season.
