Some say that ever since 2004, basketball fans up on Stoney Creek have been celebrating.

That’s because in 2004 the Unaka Rangers, led by coach Donald Ensor, went all the way and won the TSSAA Class Basketball Championship.

Friday, between the Unaka boys and girls basketball games, Ensor was recognized in front of cheering fans as school administrators and the Carter County School Board announced that the court inside Snavely Gymnasium would from now on be called Ensor Court.

“It is a huge honor,” said Ensor. “I don’t know how to put something like this into words. It is about those guys (2004 Rangers).

“I remember when I was an assistant to Ronnie (Snavely) when they named the gym after him, and how it felt to me being a former player. I felt like I was a part of that from a player’s standpoint, and I hope the guys did too.”

Some members of the 2004 Rangers were on hand as well as members of the school board and the Carter County Commission. Unaka Principal Betsy Oliver and Carter County Director of Schools Kevin Ward were also a part of the ceremony.
