Over at Johnson University, some former Hampton High School athletes are making an impact.
Over this past weekend, both the Johnson University men and women’s basketball teams won the Mid-East Regional title in their respective tournaments.
In boys action, the Royals topped Great Lake Christian College, 84-74, in Knoxville. During that win, former Bulldogs standout, Coby Jones, racked up 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals to lead the Royals to victory. Jones performance during NCCAA DII Mid-East Regional Tournament earned him the tournament MVP nod. Jones, who is a sophomore at Johnson University, has already passed the 1,000-point milestone as a Royal.
Also during the Royals win over Great Lake, Jones teammate and fellow Bulldog, Cody McClain, recorded seven points in the contest.
In girls action, former Lady Bulldog, Kinzey Hill, hit double-digits with 13 points as the Lady Royals claimed the Mid-East Regional Tournament title, 67-64, over Grace Christian University. In the overtime win, the Lady Royals overcame a 20-point deficit en route to their victory. It was the Lady Royals first region championship since 1996.
