Carter County System sees student numbers drop in nine schools

In Tuesday’s edition of the Elizabethton Star, the article Carter County School enrollment trends down over years; System faces projected loss of $600,000 in revenue, discussed the issue of declining student enrollment in the Carter County school system. Since that article, the Elizabethton Star has obtained the 2018-19 enrollment numbers for the system. Below is a breakdown of enrollment for each school in the system compared to the 2017-18 data from the Tennessee Department of Education.

According to the information below, nine schools saw student numbers drop compared to 2017-18 with Cloudland seeing the biggest decline with a loss of 38 enrolled students.

Carter County Schools: 4,955 students (2018-19), down 93 students from 5,048 (2017-18)

Central Elementary: 223 students (2018-19), down 21 students from 244 (2017-18)

Cloudland Elementary: 276 students (2018-19) down 38 students from 314 (2017-18)

Cloudland High School: 297 students (2018-19) down 4 students from 301 (2017-18)

Hampton Elementary: 581 students (2018-19) up 5 students from 576 (2017-18)

Hampton High School: 409 students (2018-19) up 8 students from 401 (2017-18)

Happy Valley Elementary: 492 students (2018-19) down 35 students from 527 (2017-18)

Happy Valley Middle School: 421 students (2018-19) down 4 students from 425 (2017-18)

Happy Valley High School: 499 students (2018-19) down 34 students from 533 (2017-18)

Hunter Elementary: 468 students (2018-19) down 34 students from 502 (2017-18)

Keenburg Elementary: 304 students (2018-19) up 9 students from 295 (2017-18)

Little Milligan Elementary: 141 students (2018-19) up 7 students from 134 (2017-18)

Unaka Elementary: 239 students (2018-19) down 13 students from 252 (2017-18)

Unaka High School: 339 students (2018-19). 2017-18 data was not available.

Valley Forge High School: 219 students (2018-19) down 3 students from 221 (2017-18)
