Smith-Carrier advance to double’s semi-finals for Cyclones in District 1 tennis

Tennis players from District 1 converged on the courts at the Liberty Bell tennis complex on Monday as the district tournament kicked off in boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles play.

The results were mixed for the Elizabethton Cyclones as Coach LeAnna Click’s team.

In first round action on the boys’ singles side of play, Alex Taylor fell to Sullivan East’s Blake Fannon by an 8-2 score.

In the second round, Elizabethton’s Jacob Lipford downed Sullivan Central’s Landon Locklear convincingly with an 8-0 victory.  However, Lipford was unable to hold of Science Hill’s Isaac Johnson in the quarterfinals dropping a 6-0, 6-1 match.

The Elizabethton boys’ managed to put a team into Tuesday’s semi-finals played at Dobyns-Bennett as the duo of Elijah Smith and Luke Carrier defeated Sullivan East’s team of Bartley and Cross by taking the match 8-1 in the second round.

Smith and Carrier followed that win up by taking down Tennessee High’s Owens and Jones 7-5, 6-4 to advance against Science Hill’s Johnson and Keith in Tuesday’s semi-final round.

The Cyclones also had the team of Nate Wetzel and Patrick O’Quinn in the second round but Sullivan South’s pair of Wilson and Haga handed the Cyclone team an 8-1 setback in their match.

In girls’ play, Elizabethton’s Lauren Snodgrass suffered a first-round defeat at the hands of Dobyns-Bennett’s Kendall Jackson who took the match 8-0.

The Lady Cyclone’s Rachel Lamb picked up a second-round win with an 8-1 victory over Volunteer’s Brooklyn Ward.

Lamb was defeated in quarterfinal play by Dobyns-Bennett’s Emily Cai in a 6-0, 6-0 match.

In doubles action, Elizabethton’s Reagan Armstrong and Susanna Digby picked up a victory in round two over East’s Guyer-Gouge winning the match 9-8 (7-2).

Also in round two play, the Lady Cyclone team of Abbie Addington and Taylor Thompson took care of Volunteer’s Moffitt-Sheerer taking the match 8-2.

The quarterfinals were not too kind to the Lady Cyclones as both teams fell to their opponents as Armstrong-Digby was defeated 6-1, 7-5 by Sullivan South’s St. Claire and Jordan while the team of Addington-Thompson fell to Sullivan East’s Murray and Galloway in a 6-0, 6-0 match.
