Cyclones drop close dual match to Gibbs, 51-30

KNOXVILLE – The Elizabethton Cyclone wrestling team traveled to Knox Gibbs on Friday where they took on Gibbs in a dual wrestling match.
Elizabethton came up just short in the contest but did have some great showings.
In the 113 weight class, Gibb’s Porter Finstad took a 10-4 decision over Holden Roaten of Elizabethton. The Eagles took the next two weight classes in forfeits over the Cyclones at 120 and 126.
The Cyclones picked up a win at 132 when Peyton Freeman pinned Hayden Layman of Gibbs at the 38-second mark of the match. Gibbs responded at 138 when George Gillman took a pinfall at 5:25 over the Cyclones Andrew Fontanez.
Gibbs took the next three weight classes at 145, 152, and 160. Christian Moore pinned Cory Lawson of EHS at 3:38, John Pittman gained a pin of Nathaniel Shepherd of the Cyclones at 1:20, and Carson Reep took a forfeit victory at 160.
Elizabethton’s Alex Conley responded with a pinfall over the Eagles Austin Meyers at the 58-second mark of their match.
Kirk Parsons of Gibbs took a pin over Samuel Fletcher of EHS at 2:46 in the 182 class. In 195, Caleb Miller of Elizabethton took a win over Mason Dockery with a pinfall at 2:37.
Defending state champ Deuce Morton ran his season record to 9-1 with a pin at 1:18 at 220 over Caden Caldwell. In the heavyweight showdown at 285, Elizabethton’s Joseph Kechter also earned a pin at 44 seconds over Damien Donoho of Gibbs.
Finally, at 106 Gibbs Marcus Smith was award a win by forfeit.
The Cyclones host the John Klock Tournament on Saturday on the mats at Elizabethton High School.
