FROM STAFF REPORTS
Even though the Elizabethton Cyclones may not have one of the most glaring records on paper, there is no doubt that Coach Lucas Honeycutt and his team are probably playing some of the best basketball of any boys team around.
They showed that on Saturday as the Cyclones held the high-powered Sullivan East Patriots to only 14 points in the first half while hanging 36 of their own to take a commanding 36-14 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish on their way to a 71-58 win.
The victory guaranteed the Cyclones a home game in the region tournament but the Cyclones would love nothing better than to capture the district title outright.
Honeycutt had to be pleased with the output of William Willocks who was doing his best impersonation of Pistol Pete Maravich in the opening half knocking down five treys and finishing with 22 of his 28 points in the opening 16 minutes of play.
Nico Ashley added seven points in the half for Elizabethton.
After a sluggish first half, East Patriot Dylan Bartley came out with a chip on his shoulder as the would drain 27 0f his game-high 30 points in the second half.
Besides Willocks, Jake Roberts had a great game with 12 points while Ashley cashed in with 10 points.
Parker Hughes registered nine points in the game with Donta Earnest collecting five. Brayden Phillips (4) and Jordan Phillips (3) closed out the scoring log for Elizabethton.
Elizabethton played Sullivan South on Monday night for the district title.
