The missing cross on Lynn Mountain has been replaced. There are now three crosses on the mountain.

Danny Hilbert, Supt. of the Elizabethton Street Dept., said the cross has been temporarily replaced. “We hope in the near future to replace all three crosses permanently,” Hilbert said.

He said the missing cross was the work of vandals. “We initially thought the cross had rotted and fell over. But, when we got up there, we found that it had been pushed until it had broken off at the ground entry point,” he said.

The crosses have been a part of the Lynn Mountain landscape since the early 1950s when a group of junior boys from First Free Will Baptist Church were challenged by their Sunday School teacher to do something “unusual” at Easter time. It almost landed them in jail when a group of the town’s citizens became irate over the cutting of trees and the clearing of a space at the crest of the mountain for the crosses.
