‘Toppers hold off Bulldogs
After holding off a tough Central team in their opening game, the Hampton Bulldogs returned to the court in the 6th Annual Food City Thanksgiving Tourney being played at Sullivan East High School on Wednesday looking to tackle another tough opponent in the Science Hill Hilltoppers.
It was a tale of two athletic teams with storied success in postseason play hooking up looking to make an early-season statement.
When the final horn sounded, Science Hill had managed to take the tough win 62-49 over Coach Ned Smith’s Bulldogs.
The difference in the game came in the opening quarter when the ‘Toppers hung 21 points on the scoreboard while Hampton could manage only nine in the period.
Morgan Lyons picked right back up where he left off against Central scoring six of the nine points for Hampton in the opening period. Conor Burleson added two and Parker Henry one point.
Science Hill hit four treys in the period to grow the big lead as Caleb McBride accounted for two of the four treys and seven points in the period. Dalvin Mathes and Jake Bedard each pitched in with one.
The Bulldogs finally got their game legs under them in the second period as they outscored the ‘Toppers 15-10 in the stanza.
Lyons was once again behind the ‘Dog attack pumping in eight points in the quarter to finish with 14 points in the opening half. 
Hampton also got two points each from Burleson, Garrett Vines, and Dalton Holsclaw with Logan Whitehead hitting 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.
Landon Wills scored four in the period to lead Science Hill who took a 31-24 edge to the intermission.
The ‘Toppers came out of the break and rode the hot shooting of Amare Redd to extend their advantage outscoring Hampton 17-12 to take the lead to 48-36 heading into the fourth period.
Lyons added five more to his ledger in the quarter with Henry scoring four and Burleson two. Hayden Campbell hit 1-of-2 free-throws as well.
Trailing by 12 points heading into the final eight minutes, the ‘Dogs couldn’t make any headway into the lead as the final quarter was a tight 14-13 in favor of the ‘Toppers.
Lyons finished with both a team and game-high 25 points in the contest for the ‘Dogs. Henry and Burleson both closed out the contest with eight points apiece.
Cadon Buckles, Holsclaw, and Vines tallied two points each with Whitehead and Campbell finishing with one each.
Lyons and Burleson also led the ‘Dogs on the boards ripping down six rebounds each. Vines dished out three assists.
Redd finished with 21 points to lead Science Hill while Keynan Cutlip and McBride finished with 13 and 12 respectively.
