The Carter County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal fire that engulfed a home in Watauga Tuesday morning.

Deputies responded to a structure fire on Rasnick Road at approximately 7:15 a.m. After the Watauga and Central Volunteer Fire Departments extinguished the fire, they found human remains inside the home. Investigators were then called to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. Their work is ongoing at the time of this release.

The body has been sent to the Quillen College of Medicine Forensic Center for autopsy and positive identification.
