The emergency call had been made by a resident who noticed smoke “coming from across the mountain,” the release said.

Farthing’s son, who was not on scene at the time of the fire, told officials the fire was caused by a wood stove, the release said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Carter County Criminal Investigations Division, Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, and the Carter County Coroner. An autopsy of Farthing is pending as well.
