Renasant Bank Christmas Classic… ‘Dogs suffer loss to talented Powell team

The Hampton Bulldogs were looking to spin some Christmas magic on the hardwood in the Renasant Bank Christmas Classic being played in Maryville.

Instead, the Bulldogs ran into a formidable foe in the Powell Panthers led by junior Ayden Greene who pumped in 28 points in the Panther’s 74-50 win over Hampton.

Greene is a D-1 football recruit who is being looked at by Tennessee, Pitt, Virginia, Arkansas, and Tulane.

The game was close in the first half as the Panthers managed to build an eight point advantage, 37-29. Eli Walls had the hot hand in the half for Powell hitting three treys and scoring 13 points in the first 16 minutes of play.

Powell also got eight points apiece from Greene and Austin Heard.

Meanwhile, Hampton was paced by eight points each by Conor Burleson and Michael Harrison to stay within shooting distance of the Panthers. Dalton Holtsclaw dropped in five points in a contributing role.

The ‘Dogs just couldn’t keep pace in the second half as Powell rolled dropping another 37 points while Hampton couldn’t get enough offense to stay with the Panthers hitting only 21 in the final half.

For the contest, Hampton was led by Cadon Buckles with nine points. Eight points apiece were recorded by Harrison, Burleson, and Holtsclaw.

Campbell, Logan Whitehead, and Burleson collected six rebounds apiece in the game. Whitehead added two blocked shots as well.

Aside from 28 from Greene, the Panthers received 15 points from Wells and 14 from Heard.
