FROM STAFF REPORTS
In the last game of the regular season for the Hampton and Unaka boys, each was looking for a springboard win into the district tournament that begins this weekend.
When the dust settled between the cross-town rivals, the Bulldogs were simply too much offensively for the visiting Rangers as Coach Ned Smith’s squad ran away with an 80-42 victory.
The Bulldogs exploded out to a 30-point lead by halftime as it seemed everything was falling their way taking a 56-26 advantage.
Eight ‘Dogs had scored in the half led by Michael Harrison’s 10 point outburst. Isaiah McCoury and Cadon Buckles were right on Harrison’s heels with nine points each.
Hayden Campbell (7), Logan Whitehead (6), Conor Burleson (4), and Dalton Holtsclaw (3) each contributed to the big first-half advantage.
Unaka’s Joseph Slagle had the hot hand for the Rangers as he blistered the cotton for 15 first-half points including four treys. Landon Ramsey chipped in with five points while Gavin Seigfried and Joe-Z Blamo totaled two each in the half.
The second half for both teams was best described as an offensive lull as Hampton managed to outscore the Rangers 24-16 in the final half of action to take the win.
Harrison and Buckles led the ‘Dogs charge with 12 points each while Burleson and Morgan Lyons contributed with 11 points apiece. Whitehead also hit double figures with 10 points.
