It’s a classic anytime that the Hampton and Unaka girls get together for a girl’s basketball game and Monday wasn’t any different as the Lady Bulldogs took a statement win just before the district tournament kicks off this week.
Four players were in double figures for Coach Brandon Carpenter’s Lady ‘Dogs as they withstood a 38-point effort from Unaka’s Lyndie Ramsey to take a huge 67-64 victory.
The first half wasn’t how Hampton wanted to get started as they found themselves looking up from a 30-22 deficit.
Ramsey pumped in 14 of her game-high 38 in the opening half and had Macey Ensor who popped two three-points for six points with Mailey Guy dropping in four points. Julie Simerly and Kiki Forney added three points apiece.
Hampton, meanwhile, was leaning on six points from Madi McClain and four points each from Macy Henry, Linsey Jenkins, and Taylor Berry to stay in contention in the ballgame. Breanna Davis and Piper Helle added two apiece for the Lady ‘Dogs.
The Lady Bulldogs came out of the locker room and quickly shaved the lead down to one at the end of the third period behind eight points from Jenkins and five from Berry. McClain and Helle chipped in with three and two respectively.
Ramsey continued her scoring pace with eight in the quarter. Forney added another trey and Simerly added a deuce in the period.
Hampton evened the game up at the end of the fourth quarter by outscoring the visitors from Stoney Creek 14-11 to end regulation at 54-54 and send the game to overtime.
In the four-minute overtime session, Hampton outscored Unaka 13-10 with all but two points coming from the foul line. The Lady ‘Dogs connected on 11-of-14 from the charity stripe.
McClain led the way offensively for Hampton by hitting a team-high 17 points. Jenkins finished with 16 points while Henry and Berry recorded 12 points apiece.
Forney finished with nine points while Ensor finished with six for the Lady Rangers. Simerly added five points.
