Two people were taken into custody Tuesday morning after leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase through Elizabethton.
The chase began around 11 a.m. in Elizabethton, led by a white sedan trailed by law enforcement vehicles. The chase continued through U.S. 321 towards Johnson City, onto Mary Patton Highway towards Hampton and back down 19-E towards Elizabethton, at speeds of up to 90 mph.
The driver crossed into the southbound lane on 19E and appeared to be tossing items from a window before crashing into a guardrail at the intersection of South Sycamore Street and Highway 19-E.
At that point, two people exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Thomas Gray, public information officer for the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, said the chase began after deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle at the Wagner Boat Ramp.
“While deputies were obtaining vehicle information, the driver took off,” Gray said. “Deputies pursued to Highway 19-E, where the suspect vehicle wrecked near the intersection with South Sycamore Street.”
William Graham, 35, will be charged with criminal impersonation, felony evasion, and possession of stolen property.
This is a developing story. We will provide updates as more information is made available.
