Reggie Allen Putman, who was charged with the shooting of a Roan Mountain man on March 1, was arraigned Monday in Carter County General Sessions Court.
Putman, 48, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, especially aggravated burglary, and attempted burglary.
During Monday’s arraignment, Sessions Court Judge Keith Bowers Jr., appointed a public defender for Putman and set a preliminary hearing for him on March 21. The judge also kept Putman’s bond at $85,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the victim, Donald Singleton, nor his wife.
Putman was also allegedly injured in a shootout with Singleton at the Roan Mountain man’s home on Cove Creek Road. According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. on March 1, and when they arrived they found both Singleton and Putman in the front yard suffering from gunshot wounds.
Witnesses told deputies that Putman was observed in Singleton’s residence and that Singleton armed himself with a .22-caliber rifle, entered his residence and confronted Putman.
Singleton told officers Putman came out of a bedroom and was armed with a 40-inch iron pipe. Singleton fired at Putman. Officers also said there was evidence that Putman fired a Smith and Wesson 9 mm pistol. The shot traveled the length of the residence and exited an exterior wall. Both men reportedly ended up in the front yard and again exchanged gunfire again.
Both Putman and Singleton were taken to the Johnson City Medical Center by helicopter with life-threatening wounds.
According to the investigating officer’s report, Singleton’s residence appeared to have been entered by kicking the front door open. The interior of the home had been ransacked.
Neighbors told officers that a man fitting Putman’s description was seen at the end of their driveway around 6:30 p.m. They said a short time later a window was shattered from the outside and a screen had been torn by an object that matched the 40-inch iron pipe.
Singleton is still recovering from gunshot wounds inflicted by Putman.
