Bulldogs advance to semifinals… Hampton fends off late West Carroll rally to secure Friday contest

The Hampton Bulldogs were looking to shake off the Carter County winless streak at the 2022 BlueCross Basketball Championships being played at the Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro when they took to the court for the first game of the Boy’s Class 1-A quarterfinals against the West Carroll Eagles .
Coach Ned Smith’s team looked unstoppable in the first half building a 15-point advantage at one point but the War Eagles continued to fight back in the second half tying the game with under three minutes before Hampton responded down the stretch to take a 60-56 win to advance to Friday’s semifinals.
Hampton and West Carroll came out of the starting blocks with offense in mind as West Carroll took the lead at the first stop of the game, 20-15 as both teams were running and gunning in the early stages.
The Bulldogs turned up the defense in the second period holding West Carroll to only three points in the quarter while putting up 21 of their own to take a 36-23 lead to the locker room.
Morgan Lyons and Hayden Campbell set the pace for the ‘Dogs in the first half with both players scoring eight points. Logan Whitehead and Conor Burleson tallied six each in the half with Cadon Buckles scoring five. Michael Harrison added a trey.
West Carroll was led by Jalin Anglin who knocked down 16 of his game-high 30 points in the opening 16 minutes. Josh Clark added five for the War Eagles.
Hampton shot 47% for the first half – 29% from the three-point line. The ‘Dogs outrebounded West Carroll 23-11 over that span.
West Carroll came out of the locker room a different team in the second half as they battled in the third quarter to outscore the ‘Dogs 21-10 to tighten the game to 46-44 heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.
The final eight minutes was a game of spurts as both teams battled to advance to Friday but it was the Bulldogs that made the plays in the last two minutes of regulation to gain the upper hand and take the contest.
Lyons recorded a double-double in the game as he scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Buckles capped off a solid game with 12 points and four assists.
Hampton’s two post players did their job on the interior as Burleson and Campbell finished with 10 points apiece. Burleson also swept the glass for seven rebounds while Campbell collected five.
The ‘Dogs finished the game shooting 27-of-59 from the field for a 46% shooting clip.
Hampton will take on East Robertson who defeated MAHS 50-49 in the second game of the day. Hampton and East Robertson tip off Friday at 4:30 p.m. central, 5:30 p.m. eastern time.
