The Elizabethton Lady Cyclones and Gate City Lady Blue Devils engaged in an old-fashioned slobber knocker on Monday as the bats on both sides were red hot for the first four innings before the Lady Cyclones finally managed to pull away for the non-conference win.
With the game tied at 10-10 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Coach Ken Hardin’s team managed to steal the lead late and pull away for a 20-10 victory.
The Lady Blue Devils led 7-1 after the top of the second thanks to scoring four runs led by Kady Davidson singled on a 2-2 count to score two and Makayla Bays singled to bring in another Gate City run.
Elizabethton responded in the bottom of the inning when Bailee VanHuss brought home a run on a fielder’s choice. Maely Ingram then roped a double – one of her five hits in the game, scoring two more Lady Cyclones.
Maddie O’Quinn doubled in the frame as well scoring one as the scoreboard read 7-5 going to the third inning. After holding Gate City scoreless in the top of the third, the Lady Cyclones added one more to their side of the scoring column making it a 7-6 contest.
Gate City continued to add to their total in the top of the fourth when they sent three more runs across the plate taking a 10-6 advantage. Elizabethton took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the fourth scoring seven runs and then followed that up with seven more in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 20-10 to close out the game by the 10-run mercy rule.
Big hits came in the fifth from Kenidy Harris, Madisun Pritchard, Maddie and Emma O’Quinn, along with Ingram who all drove in runs.
Pritchard took the win from the pitching circle as she surrendered 10 runs on eight hits over five innings. She struck out four.
Ember Jensen collected a home run in the game after clubbing one against Unicoi County on Thursday. The Cyclones totaled 21 hits in the game as a multi-hit game was recorded by Ingram, the O’Quinns, Mollie Johnson, Jensen, Pritchard, and Cheyenne Poiroux.
