Children had a chance to experience the excitement of Roan Mountain during the 14th annual “Xtreme Roan Adventures” on July 30.
For more than 50 years, the Friends of Roan Mountain have held various Naturalist Rallies for adults, however Xtreme Roan Adventures is catered towards children.
“The purpose of the event is to offer education for the kids while showing them the beauty of Roan Mountain,” said Ken Turner, the event’s organizer.
The event featured 11 different activities, teaching participants about everything from local snakes to trapping the infamous water bears. There was an activity for all ages and interests.
Participants were able to meet with local state park rangers, naturalists, and U.S. Forest Service rangers. “It’s a great opportunity to teach these kids how big of an impact they really have on our surrounding nature,” said Thomas Hatling, an Appalachian Trail Conservancy worker.
