A weekend trip sponsored by the Appalachian Highlands Honor Flight organization sends a group of veterans off in style on Friday morning. Around 20 veterans, two from the Korean War and 18 from the Vietnam War, took part in a ceremony inside Eastside Freewill Baptist Church prior to boarding a bus to visit the memorials honoring them in Washington, D.C.
On the way out, the bus made a drive through the parking lot of Eastside Elementary School to the cheers and chants of “USA, USA, USA” by the entire student body of the school. The bus was escorted by “Corporal” Jeff Campbell, driving a vintage 1942 GTW Jeep, and a group of bikers from the local chapter of Rolling Thunder all the way to Washington, D.C.
