At Roan Mountain, we house, care for, and educate the public on a variety of native animals. We work under an educational permit from TWRA. Currently, we care for three birds of prey and several snakes! As you can imagine, caring for these animals is costly, as their food and health care are a specialty!
All of our animals are non-releasable for a variety of reasons. We frequently program with these animals and never charge for educational programs when using them. Here is your opportunity to support our educational wildlife program and help us care for these animals!
All donations will go to purchase food, pay vet bills, purchase gloves, tethers, falconry equipment, aquarium bedding, and to improve and build more housing facilities for our non-releasable birds of prey.

Friday, November 11
The Night Sky — 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. — Meet at Miller Farmstead Drive Gate. Free admission. Register for the event. Join Park Ranger Philip Hylen and Interpreter Lauren Thompson for an exclusive evening of star gazing at the Miller Farmstead! You’ll learn a bit about astronomy and learn about the dangers of light pollution.
The program is FREE but group size is limited to 30 and advance registration is required and carpooling is recommended. We’ll be meeting at the Miller Farmstead Drive Gate and driving from there up to the parking and viewing area.
Dress for the weather and bring a camp chair and blanket. Hot cocoa will be provided. Bring your favorite mug to #GoGreenWithUs. All ages are welcome!

Saturday, November 12
Tomahawk Toss — 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Price is $5 and register for the event. Learn to throw a tomahawk! Join Ranger Holland as we have fun learning a popular frontier pastime.
Tomahawks provided. No previous Tomahawk-throwing experience is required to enjoy this fun program. Meet at Shed #3.

Sunday, November 13
Firecraft Wilderness Survival/Brushcraft Skill — 2 p.m. Price is $5/children 12 and under, $8/12 and over. Register for the event. Join Ranger James Holland to learn various methods of lighting a fire without matches. Instruction will include using a ferro rod, fire from batteries, traditional flint and steel, burning lens, and fire piston.
Meet at Park Headquarters prior to going to the program area.

Friday, November 25
Day After Thanksgiving Hike along Raven Rock Trail — 11 a.m. – 12 noon. Meet at the conference center porch. Price is $0/Attendee, $10/Attendee + Donation, $10/ Donation (not attending), $20/Attendee + Donation, $20/Donation (not attending). Register for the event. Join Ranger O’Day on the Day After Thanksgiving for a hike along the Raven Rock Trail. We’ll stop at the Raven Rock overlook along the way and stop to learn to identify common trees without their leaves! Upon return, we’ll enjoy hot cocoa and coffee provided by the park. Bring your favorite reusable mug to #GoGreenWithUs.
Dress in layers for the weather, with sturdy shoes, water and a snack. This hike will be approximately 2 miles and moderately difficult.
Group size is limited, so advance registration is required.

Sunday, November 27
Roast Your Own Coffee! — 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Price is $12. Meet at camper check-in. In the early 20th century, when the Miller Family lived on Ripshin Mountain, coffee beans were sold raw and roasted at home. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to roast coffee yourself using a few simple kitchen items you probably already have.
Workshop fee includes a coffee tasting, and enough raw coffee beans to test out your new skills and brew a pot of your own custom roast at home.
We’ll be roasting outdoors, so dress for the weather in layers, and bring your favorite coffee mug to #GoGreenWithUs.

Friday, December 16
Christmas Céilí at Roan Mountain State Park — 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Meet at conference center. Price is $2/kids 17 and under. $5 Adults. Register for the event. An Irish céilí (or cèilidh if you’re Scottish!) is a traditional social gathering that often includes traditional dance, music, storytelling and all kinds of good fun. In honor of our region’s Scots-Irish heritage we’ll be hosting an holiday-themed dance céilí at the Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center.
Highlights include:

* Céilí Dances: No previous dance experience is required! These dances are meant for regular people and anyone who can walk comfortable can enjoy learning them.
* Traditional Music: The newly-formed Roan Mountain Céilí Band will play a variety of dance tunes to accompany the dances, and a few other tunes in between (traditional Scottish and Irish musicians are welcome to join us, contact Ranger O’Day for details).
* Light Refreshments: Coffee & hot cocoa will be provided, as well as an assortment of holiday treats.
* Photo Booth: Attendees are encouraged to dress in festival holiday attire and take photos to celebrate and remember this special holiday event.
Dress comfortably with good shoes and come well-hydrated!
This is a ticketed event! Adults 18 and older $5 each, kids 17 and younger $2. Volunteers attend free (contact Ranger O’Day for volunteer opportunities).
