The annual lighting of the Fraser fir is scheduled to take place Saturday evening at 5 o’clock. The historic tree is located in the front yard of the Folsom House, located across the street from the Carter County Courthouse on Elk Avenue.
The event is sponsored by Carter County Bank.
The Folsom House Fraser fir at 78 feet tall is listed as the tallest decorated Fraser fir in the world and is reported to be the second tallest in the world. The tree was planted in the front yard of the Henderson Folsom home since shortly after the Civil War. Originally, two Fraser firs were planted on the front lawn, but only one survived. The trees were reportedly taken from Roan Mountain.
Right after the tree lighting, the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Dept. will hold its Candy Cane Quest at Cat Island Park. Children are invited to search the park in the darkness to find the thousands of candy canes hiding out there. The Parks and Rec will furnish fee bags to hold candy canes found by the children and will also provide free flashlights while the supply lasts.
Some of the canes hidden in the park are special — they can be redeemed for prizes.
Also, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting at the Covered Bridge Park stage from 6 to 8 p.m. Children will be able to visit with the Christmas couple to give them their Christmas wish list.
