Lady Buffs climb AAC Standings, Milligan U takes two from Montreat

 Milligan’s Men’s and Women’s squads traveled to Montreat, North Carolina on Saturday with both teams looking to improve their standing in the Appalachian Athletic Conference before tournament play begins in a couple of weeks.
Womens- Milligan 68 Montreat  55
The Buffs outscored Montreat 25-10 in the second period to pull away and never looked back. Jaycie Jenkins entered the game at the 8:07 mark of the second period, hitting a layup and a long three-pointer that started a spark for the Lady Buffs that led to a 14-0 run and allowed the Lady Buffs to go up 30-11 with 3:11 left in the half. Lauren Longmire hit a layup after an assist from Kayla Romines that allowed the Lady Buffs to go into the locker room up 39-19.
The second half would see the Lady Buff keep the Cavaliers at arm’s length, as the Cavs could get no closer than  11 points with under a minute left in the game. Milligan would shoot nearly 50 percent on the day and force 11 turnovers from the Cavs, leading to 22 points. The Lady Buffs improved to 16-5. Having won seven of their last eight games to take over sole possession of second place and just stand two games behind Bryan. The Lady Buffs have a looming home game with Bryan on Feb. 18.
Lauren Longmire had 14 points on the day while Semaj Clark chipped in 12. Milligan will next play host to Columbia on Tuesday.
Mens- Milligan 82 Montreat 67
The Men’s squad looked strong grabbing a 15-point road win over the 12-8 Cavaliers. The two teams combined on the day for 53 three-point attempts, with Milligan getting the advantage shooting 37% on the day and 45% from the field. The Buffs would take just a two-point advantage into the locker room after a Drew Greene free throw. Milligan would push its lead to seven after  Dylan Bartley cut through two defenders for a bank-shot layup and then to 14 after an 8-2 run at the five-minute mark of the final half. Statistically, Milligan would have a huge advantage on the day in free throws going 34-41 for the day from the charity stripe.
Dylan Bartley would lead all scorers with 17, while Finn McClure and Sam Gold would contribute 15 and 14 respectively.  Milligan Men’s team improved to 8-13 this season and 8-10 in AAC play; they will travel to play Colombia International  University next Saturday with a 4 pm tipoff.
