While most of the students in the Elizabethton School system are enjoying time sleeping in and goofing off during this week’s Spring Break, the same can’t be said about the Elizabethton Lady Cyclone softball team who is participating in a tournament hosted by Riverdale High School out of the Murfreesboro area.
The Lady Cyclones opened the tournament with two big wins on Monday.
Game 1
Lauderdale Co., AL…….5
Elizabethton.. …………..6
In the day’s first game, the Lady Cyclones were looking to tame the Lady Tigers of Lauderdale Co., Alabama.
The game was a tight fisted affair after the Cyclones regrouped from a three-run uprising in the second inning by their opponents and with the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth and final inning, the Lady Cyclones received a walk-off single by freshman pitcher Lela Byrd to take a dramatic 6-5 victory.
Byrd picked up the win from the circle, pitching the complete game and allowing five runs on six hits while fanning four Lady Tiger batters.
Elizabethton recorded 11 hits in the game as Maely Ingram, Kenidy Harris, Mollie Johnson, and Ember Jensen each collected a pair of base hits to lead the charge for head coach Ken Hardin’s squad.
Macks led the Lady Tigers with two base hits on the day.
Game 2
Saint Viator, IL………. 1
A big fifth inning by the Lady Cyclones blew the gates wide open as Elizabethton sent eight runners across the dish in the frame to take what was a 5-1 Lady Cyclone lead to 13-1 to put a lid on the contest.
Sadie Williams, Hannah Morgan, Maely Ingram, Emma O’Quinn, Ember Jensen, and Kenidy Harris contributed big RBIs in the frame.
Mollie Johnson was the pitcher of record as the junior righty allowed only one hit and one run over 4-2/3 innings of action. Johnson rang up nine K’s on the afternoon. Lilly McDuffie finished off the game from the circle coming in from the bullpen.
Elizabethton was back in action on Tuesday when they played Bellbrook from Ohio and North Daviess, who hails from Indiana.
