Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley said crews responded to a fire at Southern Craft BBQ near Watauga Lake early Thursday morning.
The sheriff said the restaurant is a “total loss.”
He said the call came in around 5:19 a.m. Thursday. Fire crews were still on the scene around 9 a.m., and he asked motorists to avoid Highway 321 around the lake. Fire crews said the restaurant was “fully engulfed” when they arrived on scene. Fire crews from Hampton-Valley Forge Fire Dept., Butler Fire Dept., and Elk Mills Fire Dept., were among those on the scene.
The restaurant was formerly known as the Captain’s Table and was located at the entrance to Lakeshore Marina.
Southern Craft has operated the Watauga Lake restaurant since May 2022. The restaurant was owned by Rafael Zabala of Mountain City.
