FROM STAFF REPORTS
JOHNSON CITY — At 12:04 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, officers from the Johnson City Police Department swiftly responded to a tragic motor vehicle crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 26, near mile marker 17.
Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement discovered that a Mazda 3, driven by Keyona Dukes, was heading westbound on I-26 when it veered off the roadway. The vehicle crossed the median and cable barrier, colliding with a Toyota Sequoia driven by Kristina Templeton in the eastbound lanes.
The impact sent both the Mazda and Sequoia careening into a Dodge Journey, operated by Emily Carver. Subsequently, all three vehicles left the roadway and collided with an earthen embankment. The Mazda overturned, and the Sequoia came to rest on top of it.
First responders faced the arduous task of extracting both occupants from the Mazda – Keyona Dukes and a juvenile passenger. The injured individuals were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Unfortunately, the juvenile passenger succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.
Fortunately, the occupants of the other vehicles, including Kristina Templeton in the Toyota Sequoia and Emily Carver in the Dodge Journey, along with their passengers, escaped the incident without serious injuries.
The Johnson City Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team promptly responded to the scene and has taken charge of the investigation. As authorities work to piece together the sequence of events leading to the crash, the community mourns the loss of a young life and hopes for the swift recovery of those injured in this devastating incident.
Updates on the investigation will be provided as they become available.
