TBI investigating death of inmate at Carter County Detention Center

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has launched an investigation into the death of an inmate at the Carter County Detention Center.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Thursday, a correction officer discovered an inmate unresponsive in their cell at the Carter County Detention Center. Promptly, officers called for jail medical staff and requested emergency medical services (EMS) to attend to the situation. CPR was administered to the inmate by officers until EMS arrived on the scene.

EMS then transported the inmate to a local medical facility, where the individual was pronounced dead.

Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley stated, “As with any in-custody death, an investigation into the cause of death has been opened. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will be conducting an investigation into the death of the inmate and determining the cause of death. My office will be cooperating with the TBI during the investigation.”
